Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin Participates in the 30th Annual Conference of the Economic Research Forum

Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin took part in the 30th Annual Conference of the Economic Research Forum in a plenary session discussing the SDG Stimulus needed to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. He highlighted current global progress on the SDGs, noting that only around 15% of SDG targets are currently on track, with the remainder either stagnating or reversing.

Dr. Mohieldin discussed regional comparisons in SDG progress, examining how the ERF region compares to other developed and developing regions worldwide, and presented recent deteriorations in SDG progress resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and the growing financing gap.

He compared existing gaps in SDG financing needs and stressed the importance of more granular data-collection methods for producing accurate financing-needs figures. He also addressed the risks of relying excessively on debt financing, highlighting the importance of solid debt management — particularly liquidity management — for developing economies facing debt distress.

Finally, Dr. Mohieldin discussed regionalization and localization as vehicles for catalyzing SDG and climate finance, underscoring the importance of country-level analysis to identify gaps, using Egypt's financing-for-development report as an example.
